The Grand Site of the Gorges du Tarn spans 20,000 hectares of untouched and preserved nature. While the Gorges can be explored on foot with numerous hiking trails, canoe-kayak rental is the most famous way to discover this magnificent area.
The Gorges du Tarn are home to several hamlets nestled along the river or carved into the cliffs. Some, isolated on the left bank of the Tarn, can only be accessed on foot or by river. This is why canoe rental is one of the region’s must-do activities.
During the summer, many tourists flock to canoe-kayak rental stations. The canoe descent of the river is a unique experience that should not be missed. With routes for all levels, the lively waters of the Tarn will leave you with unforgettable memories.
Some special spots known to the locals, where a few informed vacationers stay each year, include the medieval village of Sainte-Enimie, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Sainte-Enimie will share its legendary secrets and miraculous spring with you. Upstream of Sainte-Enimie, you'll pass by the village of Castelbouc and the ruins of its castle overlooking the Tarn, where you'll discover a preserved and authentic nature.
The village of Saint-Chély-du-Tarn is another emblematic location. Saint-Chély is a must-stop during the canoe descent. You can take a break on one of the small beaches after passing under the bridge connecting the two riverbanks, where you can admire the waterfalls falling from the village. Time seems to have stood still here, and few places in France have maintained such authenticity.
Continue your descent and discover the Château de La Caze, the famous hamlet of Auterive, and the village of La Malène. Finish your journey by navigating through narrow straits and stopping near the majestic Cirque des Baumes.
Accessible to all, you’ll navigate clear waters in a deep and spectacular canyon, always surrounded by nature—water, flora, and fauna. You'll have the chance to discover and observe the many fish species of the Tarn, such as trout and barbel, as well as glimpse beavers that live along the river, and several remarkable bird species like the kingfisher, the grey wagtail, and, high in the sky, the famous vultures (griffon and monk), which were introduced over 30 years ago.
Only canoe-kayak will allow you to experience this intimate connection with nature—don’t miss this unforgettable experience.
